Hi John I want to play two sound modules using my JX305 as the master keyboard (but not using its sounds) I connected Midi-out of the JX to Midi-in of my Roland SC-155 and Midi-thru of the SC-155 to Midi-in of my Roland SC-88. Both SCs audio out going to my mixer. The sound of the SC-155 comes through great but nothing comes from the SC-88. Have I mis-routed the cables? All are on midi channel 1 Regards Spike

Hi Spike,
Sorry for the delay, I'm a little busy with other things at the moment. Didn't log in yesterday at all. That, and a good list of songs to make orchestral backing tracks for keeps me busy. How about you?
As far as I know, with doing a similar thing, AN1x MIDI to Yammy MU1000 then Roland SC-8850, has worked for me. Although I use different MIDI channels (keyboard split).
Keyboard Out to 155 in, then 155 thru to 88 in should work correctly, even though both are using the same channel. Thru should forward all MIDI events that arrive at the in port. Check the cables, maybe swapping the first with the second, if you haven't already tried that. If not check the cable soldering of the second one.
Many cables sold as MIDI are in fact audio cables, with all five conductors connected. MIDI only uses the three central conductors, i.e. the screen and the terminals directly either side. The two outer conductors aren't used. Check the wiring diagram at the MMA web site for reference. The fact that the outside conductors are connected shouldn't make any difference though.
Is there any way of checking whether the MIDI is arriving at the SC88?
Regards, John.

Hi John Thanks for your response. Last night I changed the midi cables round and it works fine so your suggestion is a good one. The next step for me is to split the JX305 keyboard and have the lower operate the SC88 and the upper the SC155 From your post I assume I have to set the SC155 receive channel to say ch2 but how would I have the upper keys set to transmit on CH2 and the lower keys (for the SC88) on CH1? Kind regards Spike

Hi Spike,
Ah! Glad that worked. With my AN1x I am able to specify that the splits operate on different channels, it only allows for two. I know I had to scour the manual to find out how to do it. It was hidden away, as I recall, in one of the more unusual menu items. I forget exactly where.
Regards, John.

Hi John Just an update - the JX305 when you press the split keyboard button it automatically assigns midi CH2 to the lower part and Midi CH1 to the upper so you only have to alter the RX channel of the SC88 to CH2 Regards Spike

Excellent Spike.
That makes it very straightforward. With the AN1x you have to change it specifically. But, as I recall, it can take any value from 1 to 16.
Have fun!
Kind regards, John.
