Hi everyone...
I'm gordon, and recently bought my sw1000xg and another board that comes with it, plus the i/o thing. (i can't be expected to memorize these model#s right? =) )
anyway, I sent johng this message and below explains why I'm here:
On Mar 11, 2013 at 9:15am, JohnG wrote a tutorial that will do:
"In this lesson we will only make use of the computer keyboard and the mouse, as far as note input is concerned. Naturally you will need to have your computer connected up to a suitable sound creation source; a sound card or module, or some kind of virtual instrument, if you want to hear our creation."
There's a lot of text, which is good, but I want to confirm if there's a tutorial on how to insert midi notes from a digital piano via a midi usb cable with XGWORKS using sw1000xg? I've tried for hours, and got to the point where I can use the virtual keyboard in XGworks to play music on the physical digital piano via the usb cable, but I'm not able to insert notes / music into XGWorks via the digital piano. Is it possible?
I've also skimmed msg written on "Apr 2, 2013 at 1:38am" "It is that we don't necessarily have to have a MIDI keyboard in order to create musical sequences.
Everything can be done using the computer keyboard and the mouse." ...But I don't see anything about midi keyboard input. If very possible, can someone do a tutorial on how I do a start to finish to getting my midi keyboard setup and input into XGWorks? And please give a screen shot of the setup -> system setup. I've googled for hours, but no go.
Lastly, where can I get a copy of version 4 of XGWORKS? Can someone PM me? I only have version 3. This is my first post. Thank you very much. Gordon

Gordon's introductory post upon request to join the forum.
Hi Gordon,
And a very warm welcome to the forum. If you care to look closely at the other posts here, you'll notice that I have already posted your introduction (the longest, I think, that I've experienced to date) in "Gordonswxg posted an intro to the forum." (When I have a few free moments I'll merge these two introduction posts together.)
Henry has already posted a reply to some of your questions there. What I'd suggest is printing out a copy, if you can, of the XGworks manual that came with the software. It's a pdf file. That's what I did when I upgraded from XGW2 to 3. You'll find many answers to your questions there.
XGworks version 3 was the last version of the program that was made available in the West. There was a version 4 and then another called XGworks ST. These were only released in Japan as far as I can ascertain. A cut down version, called SQ01, was released as a freebie that accompanied some of Yamaha's synths a while back. SQ01 was a cut down version of a program Yamaha called SOL. SOL was the upgraded XGworks. SOL had two versions numbered simply SOL1 and SOL2.
If you take a trip to "groups.yahoo.com" you will find a forum there called "xgworksusers". There you should be able to find links to various bits of the above software. You will also find a very fine synopsis of the software in this forum in the topic "SQ01 first impressions". The summary is provided by Henry.
You're quite right that there's no post about real time keyboard input. I'll try to rectify that soon. At the moment I'm gradually working my way through the tutorials, replacing all the images which were hosted at PhotoBucket, because they now want around $400 a year for this service. No way can I afford that. That'll take a little time.
I'll try to find some time, later in the day today, to write a few words to point you in the right direction.
Once again welcome to the forum. Hopefully, between a few of us, we'll soon have you up and working.
Kind regards, JohnG.

Hi Gordon, Entering notes into XGworks using your digital piano (i.e. recording the notes you play) should be quite easy. Assuming the software driver for your piano's USB connection has been installed on the computer - and it appears you've got that part working already - the rest is a matter of setting the correct MIDI inputs and outputs in XGworks. - Click Setup and open XGworks' System Setup menu.
- Have a look under the Devices tab, and make sure your piano's MIDI interface is selected as MIDI In.
- For MIDI Thru, select the device you want to monitor incoming MIDI notes with (i.e. the synthesizer you want to listen to as you play).
- For MIDI Out, select the devices you want for playback of your songs (e.g. 1: "SW1000XG #1", 2: "SW1000XG #2", 3: "Your piano", and so on).
- Click Setup and open the Record/Playback Settings menu. Here, you need to check that the Record Mode is set to "Realtime".
Now, head back to the Track View, and get ready to record:
- Click in the "Rec" column of the appropriate track, to arm it for recording (a red "R" symbol is shown, indicating that the track is ready to receive your notes).
- In the tape-style transport section, click the red record button, and then the play button, and away you go!
You should now see the locator line moving to the right, and a coloured bar forming behind it as notes are being recorded to the track. If you have defined and activated the metronome function, you should hear that as well.
When you're done recording, press the stop button of the transport. Rewind and press play to hear your recording. If you intend to keep the take, you should now remove the track-arming "R" symbol, to keep this track from being overwritten.
Once you get this far, you should experiment with your track's "Port" and "Ch/Pan" settings for playback:
- Clicking in the "Port" column brings up a list of available MIDI outputs (those set in step 4), and lets you decide which synthesizer is going to reproduce the notes of each track.
- Clicking in the "Ch/Pan" column allows you to select the MIDI channel, on which the note data is transmitted.
I'm afraid I'm unable to provide screenshots at the moment, since I don't have XGworks 3 installed myself. Most of this is described in the early parts of the XGworks 3 manual, though, which you can download and print from here:

Hi Gordon,
You also mentioned a second audio card with additional I/O, and I'm guessing that would be the Yamaha DS2416 (a.k.a. DSP Factory) with an AX44 expansion box. I used those same boards for years, and I always found them to be excellent bits of recording equipment! The SW1000XG/DS2416 combo is not the easiest to use, unfortunately, since there's a lot of internal audio signal routing to be mindful of. If you can't get any sound out of your SW1000XG, chances are we might have to deal with the DS2416 setup as well. I'll guide you through it, should it be required.
To begin with, I recommend that you use the line outputs on the rear of the SW1000XG for listening, since those work independently of the DS2416.

At the moment I'm gradually working my way through the tutorials, replacing all the images which were hosted at PhotoBucket, because they now want around $400 a year for this service. No way can I afford that. You might consider interserver.net if you pay for 3 years of hosting, it's 4 dollars per month, so 3 years would be $144. =) you get something like 400,000 inodes in terms of storage. I don't know how many files this would be, but should be sufficient. PM me for reference so that I get credit in case you need them and I'll give you a referral link. Also, I believe they have a 0.01 dollar trial for the 1st month to test them out. Ask them for the coupon. I will say if you want the best service from them, you need to log in and submit tickets, and when you reply via email, check that your reply goes into the ticket, otherwise, you'll be stressed with their support. They do have 24/7 support in terms of people you want to talk to. I think for one year service, it's about $5/month. Great thing about interserver is that the price is locked for life on all renewals. Make sure you get these confirmations and screenshots via email, in particular, if you want to get a hostname from them, be sure to ask and confirm that's locked at $1.99 too cuz the techs don't really read the tickets and they may say it's 4 dollars for hostnames later. If you don't understand what they say, be sure to ask for clarification. Of course, the above deal is for basic internet package and is not a VPS. VPS is $6/month, but the bandwidth thing is not unlimited as the basic internet package.

Thanks for the suggestion, Gordon.
I have found a site called postimage.org which, for the moment at least, is prepared to host images for free. I'm hopeful that they will do for a good while, although there's always an issue with funding these sites.
Since I archive all the images in a folder on my hard drive, after a similar problem in the past, at least I haven't lost any as I did the last time this happened. But I'll make a note of the site for future reference.
For me, it has to be the least cost option I always go for. I'm retired and therefore on fixed income. I get no other funding for the forum. The ProBoards forums are hosted for free but they get the advertising revenue. I'm happy with that. Postimage is free at the moment, though they do not guarantee bandwidth of server up-time.
JohnG.
P.S. I posted a quick reply to you in "XGworks Tutorial 4". I hope it starts a thought process.
